Backroads of Germany - Bavaria

Germany’s largest state is worthy of an entire vacation – it has the best of all worlds. The Vibrant city of Munich, synonymous with Oktoberfest, with it’s easy access and thriving mix of cultures forms the region’s main getaway. And yet just a couple hours drive from Munich is the charming Bavarian countryside, filled with romantic castles and grand imperial palaces, spectacular mountain peaks, rolling hills, and lovely lakes, with the mighty Danube running through its heartland. Towns seeped in history are dotted along its banks, and if this is not enough, you are within a few hours drive of Salzburg, Tyrol, Northern Italy and Northwest Slovenia!

Trip Highlights

  • With the Danube river winding through its heart, Bavaria has some of the most traditional and scenic towns of Germany. Begin your trip in the Marienplatz, the historic center of Munich – the capital city of Bavaria
  • Drive along the Romantic road, through the medieval towns of Rothenburg-ob-der-Tauber, Dinkelsbühl, and Nördlingen – each prettier than the other. In Rothenburg, take the Night watchman tour which brings history alive in the most entertaining and histrionic setting
  • Heading South, visit the Neuschwanstein Castle – widely recognized as the inspiration for Walt Disney’s theme park castles – and Linderhof Palace – glittering with lavish ornamentation, its size and its setting amid cool green forests give it an intimate appeal
  • Cool your heels on the banks of the Königssee – the stunning emerald green lake surrounded by steep wooded mountainsides and the rocky cliffs of the Watzmann range.  Ride up to Kehlsteinhaus, or Eagle‘s Nest,  soaring over 6000 feet high, overlooking teh spectacular Berchtesgaden region.

Best time to visit

Summer is the best time to visit (July-Aug) with long warm days.  However, shoulder months of May-June and September are also worth considering as the crowds are lesser. Most attractions in the mountains are either closed or run on reduced opening hours during winter months, however, there are plenty of opportunities for skiing and other winter sport

medieval architecture, world war history, scenic drives, unique cultural tours, fairy tale castles, iconic beer
